Super good question. Of course understanding it is not possible for everyone to know their time and location of birth - and it's okay. If you don't have your exact time of birth, it's better to not make a guess or its like getting someone else's eyeglasses - the frame may be nice, but the prescription is not for you. Below is a description of the accuracy you can expect based on what information you have.
This is how accurate it becomes with specific information about you:
Perfectly fine: No information - general planetary movements and how they affect everyone.
Good: Your birth date - sun sign and maybe your moon. A generic take on how energies affect everyone with your sun|moon sign
Better: Birth date + location of birth, the signs the planets were in when you were born which is like assigning them a personality. Some of the types of energy you have to work with in this life.
THE FULL PICTURE: Birth date + location + time. A snapshot of where the planets were at the time of your birth = What houses & signs the planets were in plus some cool calculations about how those energies interact with each other as well as some indicators of destiny and karma. It also notes your Ascendant (Rising sign) which is a much better predictor of your horoscope than only the sun sign.
